Eating Disorders Among Boys and Men

About the Course

Eating disorders among boys and men are often underdiagnosed and undertreated due to misconceptions and lack of knowledge among health care providers. This course will provide clinicians with important information on the specific body image concerns and eating disorder behaviors among boys and men. This includes muscle dissatisfaction and drive for muscularity, as well as behaviors such as bulking and cutting, protein overconsumption, excessive exercising/weight training, and use of appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs and substances (i.e., whey protein, anabolic-androgenic steroids). Clinicians will also leave the course with targeted methods to assess and screen male clients for eating disorders and related behaviors.

Kyle Ganson, PhD, MSW is a licensed clinical social worker in both Maine and Massachusetts and has over 7 years of post-masters clinical practice experience working with adolescents and adults in a variety of mental health care settings. His clinical experience and research has largely focused on individuals and families experiencing major mental health concerns, with a particular interest and expertise in eating disorders treatment among the under-served and under-researched male population.
