About the Course

Help your clients overcome their ambivalence to change by using Motivational Interviewing Strategies. In our Motivational Interviewing Strategies: Adolescents course Dr. Aimee Chiligiris from Columbia University shares her expertise on the five principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI), the four MI processes, and MI communication skills. This information and skill set can be used by a wide variety of practitioners, including health and wellness coaches, licensed mental health clinicians and other health care clinicians. The course also offers a selection of learning tools such as expert discussion and explanation, role plays, and knowledge checks. The course also includes supplementary tools like printable resources and learners must have completed the Motivational Interviewing Strategies: Foundations course before beginning this course.

Learning Objectives

Experts


Aimee Chiligiris, PsyD
Aimee Chiligiris, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns. She is the Clinical Director of the Smithers Center and is on faculty as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Chiligiris completes diagnostic assessments, engages in individual therapy, and facilitates groups. Dr. Aimee Chiligiris completed her doctorate at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She completed her internship and post-doctoral residency at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, specializing in the treatment of adolescents and young adults with co-occurring concerns. She also received training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral and motivational interviewing approaches. She has worked with clients of all ages in a variety of levels of care. She has treated patients experiencing mood disorders, anxiety, characterological concerns, substance use disorders, disordered eating behaviors, and trauma related concerns. She has served as adjunct faculty for a course on addictions and completed research regarding building resilience for at-risk youth. Her special interests include the assessment and treatment of co-occurring concerns in early adulthood. She also has interest in building motivation, connection and skills in recovery; working with family members influenced by substance use; and treatment planning for complex co-occurring presentations.

Sam Lookatch, PhD
Sam Lookatch, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, currently practicing within the Smithers Center within the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee. She completed internship at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Cpl. Michael J. Crescenz VAMC in Philadelphia. Her research broadly focused on addiction treatment outcomes with her fellowship work addressing the role of social support in the enhancement of addiction treatment for Veterans and she currently serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Couple and Family Psychology: Research and Practice. Dr. Lookatch specializes in the treatment of substance use and other co-occurring mental health disorders (i.e. PTSD, anxiety, depression). She has a passion for aiding clients in improving their communication skills and relationships to ultimately lead to better overall functioning and life satisfaction and has provided care at inpatient, residential and outpatient clinics. Presently, she provides treatment through assessment, individual, couple/family and group therapy and serves as a supervisor for doctoral level psychology trainees.

Paul Deger, MA, LPC, PT
Paul has learned from his over 35 years of experience in health care that, with patient and compassionate support, we are far more capable of responding to challenges and growth than we tend to believe. We can all access a deep well of peace, wisdom and courage within. Paul began his health career as a Physical Therapist, specializing in neurological rehabilitation. Paul then shifted focus from physical to psychological health, specializing in mindfulness-based interventions. Recognizing the importance of a holistic approach, Paul also did graduate studies in pastoral care. He has worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor in hospital-based, private practice and home-based settings. Paul has taught mindfulness meditation, stress management and health behavior change nationally as well as an invited speaker at professional conferences. Paul is known for creating and delivering insightful and engaging mental well-being learning experiences with NPS scores over 90 and mental well-being products that drive measurable improvements in mental well-being. He is committed to the integration of clinical and creative design towards making engageable and effective education that moves us out of stigma and into mental wellbeing as an attainable right for all! When not working, Paul enjoys rock climbing and vintage car shows with his son.

Melissa Leeth, MA, LMHC
Melissa (she/her) is a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) with care delivery, volunteer, teaching, and research experience within the field of psychology. Melissa’s passion for aiding others first ignited when she began volunteer work at a domestic violence shelter during her undergraduate years at Indiana University. Since that time, Melissa has earned a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Indianapolis, gained clinical experience as a mental health therapist in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and taught introductory psychology courses at the community college level.
